Laminate Flooring Installation

Laminate has changed. Newer waterproof laminate is far tougher than the swelling floors people remember.

Jacksonville Flooring Contractors HQ connects you with a local installer who can quote it against vinyl plank side by side.

It often costs noticeably less for a similar look.

Slab and humidity check

Laminate floats over the slab on an underlayment with a moisture barrier. Over concrete, the full job can include grinding, primer and self leveling compound before the first board goes down, and those steps belong on the quote.

Waterproof Laminate Is a Different Product

Old laminate soaked up spills at the seams and puffed up. The waterproof laminate sold now passed long soak tests with no swelling, right alongside vinyl plank. If your idea of laminate is from twenty years ago, it's worth a fresh look.

Check the product's own warranty for wet areas. Some allow full bathrooms; some stop at kitchens.

Laminate or Vinyl Plank?

In side by side scratch and stain tests, vinyl plank came out ahead overall, with laminate a strong and cheaper second. Laminate actually cleaned up best after furniture was dragged across it.

Laminate feels harder and sounds a little more hollow. Vinyl plank is quieter and more forgiving of dents. Both handle pets better than engineered wood.

Where the Real Cost Hides

A laminate job priced as material plus install labor leaves out a lot. Over a slab, the full job can include grinding, primer, leveling compound, a moisture barrier, trim and furniture moving.

In one real job of about a thousand square feet, those extras pushed the all in price to around thirteen dollars a square foot. Prices change, but the lesson holds: prep is part of the floor.

None of that is padding. It's what keeps the floor flat and quiet. A quote that skips it isn't cheaper; it's incomplete. See how to compare flooring quotes.

Install Details Worth Asking About

  • Click system. Drop and lock planks go in faster than the tilt and tap style, and are less likely to have a joint knocked loose.
  • First row planning. Layout gets checked against both walls so the last row isn't a sliver.
  • Clean grooves. Debris or a broken bit of tongue trapped in a joint is a common reason a seam opens later.
  • Gentle tapping. Every joint you lock can loosen the one beside it. Good installers use an offcut of the same floor as a tapping block.
  • Expansion gap and trim. About a quarter inch at every wall, with real baseboard or quarter round rather than thin shoe molding.

Living With It

Sweep or vacuum grit often, since sand under shoes is what dulls any hard floor. Wipe spills instead of letting them sit, even on waterproof products, and put felt pads under chair legs.

Where Laminate Fits Best

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and many kitchens. It's a good pick for a rental or a house you plan to sell, where you want a clean wood look at a moderate price.
